Rocking right along

A couple of things happened today.

First Dawn and I had an early appointment in the morning to meet with the stone folks. This is where we'll be getting our counter tops.

Our builder had talked to a representative ahead of time, so they had about 25 samples on a table in the general price range of our estimate. We went over the areas to be covered: kitchen counter top, kitchen island, laundry room counter top, kids' bathroom counters, the master bath counter top, and the downstairs bathroom counter top.

The company seems like they know what they are doing. They do ALL the work--cutting and edging, delivering, and mounting sinks. They also reinforce the bottom with a little rebar in the skinnier areas. They also have what they call the boneyard. It is an area where the leftovers go. The gal we spoke with suggested we pick out the larger pieces--basically the stuff going in the kitchen--and use remnants for the other areas. Seems they do enough jobs so there is always a ton of stuff laying around. Their boneyard is in Greensboro, so we'll likely make a trip out that way when the time is right.

We picked out what we liked. Then the lady said she'd email us some photos of the one we liked.

At the end of the day, we spent more time getting there from the house than we spent at the actual store. Pretty much everything we talked about there could have been handled in a phone call. But oh well.

Later that afternoon we grabbed the kids and went to the building site.

A lot of progress has been made. The basement seems to be mostly framed up now. They were working on what will eventually be the subflooring of the first floor.

The slide, yet again, causes me trouble. In the last version that I had, the slide would be spitting the kids right out into the open part. Adjacent to that we were keeping as closed-off storage. The builder saw me (probably frowning) looking at that part of the framing with some confusion. There was a doorway where I didn't think there was supposed to be. The plans have it as built, so I guess the game is that the framing has to match the plans, you get the inspection, then you tear it down and move the doorway. I dunno. Anyway, based on what I was looking at, the storage area can't be closed off now with a door since the slide exits into that area.

So I think that means we may have to insulate that area now? Who knows. The slide is turning into a death by a thousand paper cuts.

Regardless, there is a basic stairway going from the basement up to... the sky. The kids loved it.

The perceived size has taken an interesting ride. When the hole was dug, it seemed meh. When the Superior walls were put up, it seemed smaller. When the basement floor was poured it looked bigger. Now with the framing it looks small again. And the office, playroom, bedroom, and theater seem quite small. Not a lot to do about it now.
