As expected, when posed the scenario in the earlier "Etiquette" post, our builder understood. I was afraid if we went outside the recommended suppliers, that would hurt him. Aside from some potential quality issues he cited with big-box stores sometimes being inferior internally, he has no issues with us saving a little dough.
It never hurts to ask, or show that we are trying to be cost conscious.
